The main character in the story:
Lucy Amaning is a widow and mother of three in the Afram Plains District of Ghana who depends on cropping maize for a living.
The problem:
Lucy has had good maize harvests over the years but did not get good prices due to cheating by middlewomen. She could barely afford the high cost of farm inputs. She also found it difficult to keep her children in school.
Action taken to resolve the problem:
Lucy was introduced to a Farmer-Based Organization (FBO) involved in maize production and marketing. The organization is also a Listeners Club of an agricultural program on Sunrise 106.7 FM station in the regional capital. Lucy became very active in the group becoming its marketing officer
The resolution and its impact on the character:
The group arranged with the local transport union to convey members’ produce to the regional capital weekly for sale by their representatives. They also sold in bulk to boarding schools and other institutions. By this, members avoided middlewomen at the farm gate and earned more cash. Lucy made a good decision to improve her lot.
